Step 3: Apply for VA Education Benefits

Once you know which program you qualify for, apply through the VA.

1️⃣ Go to the VA’s Education Benefits Portal
📌 Apply for Education Benefits

2️⃣ Submit VA Form 22-1990 (GI Bill) or VA Form 22-1995 (if transferring schools)

  • You’ll receive a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) in the mail.

3️⃣ Provide your COE to your school’s VA Certifying Official

  • Schools must certify your enrollment before the VA sends payments.

Step 4: Apply for Additional Financial Aid (If Needed)

Veterans can use federal financial aid along with the GI Bill. Consider applying for:

💰 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)

  • Some veterans qualify for Pell Grants & Work-Study Programs

Step 5: Maximize Your Education Benefits

🔹 Take Advantage of Veteran Support Services

  • Many schools have Veteran Resource Centers with career advisors and mental health support.

  • Some programs offer priority registration for veterans.

🔹 Look into Credit for Military Experience

  • Some colleges give college credit for military training (use your JST or CCAF transcript).

  • Request your Joint Services Transcript (JST)

🔹 Consider Online Programs for Flexibility

  • If you’re working or transitioning to civilian life, online programs can help you balance education.

Step 6: Keep Track of VA Payments & Renewal Requirements

  • Verify your enrollment each month (for MGIB & VR&E users)

  • Keep track of how many months of benefits remain

  • If transferring to another school, submit VA Form 22-1995
